The refundable security deposit collected at pickup exists to cover repair or replacement costs if rental equipment is returned damaged, incomplete, or not returned at all. If the equipment is returned in the condition it was rented in, the full deposit is refunded.
Equipment is inspected and tested by Starbound Rentals before each rental and again at return. We're happy to walk through the equipment's condition together at pickup so there's a shared understanding of its starting condition.
Normal wear and tear is expected and is not charged against your deposit. This includes things like minor scuffs on the travel case, light dust or dirt from outdoor use, or minor cosmetic wear that doesn't affect the equipment's function.
Damage beyond normal wear and tear — such as cracked components, damaged cables, a scratched or broken dish/antenna, water damage beyond what the equipment is rated for, or missing accessories — will be assessed against the security deposit. Where the cost of repair or replacement is less than the deposit amount, the remaining balance is refunded. Where the cost exceeds the deposit, the renter is responsible for the difference.
If rental equipment is lost, stolen, or not returned, the renter is responsible for the full current replacement cost of the equipment, in addition to forfeiting the security deposit toward that cost. We recommend treating rental equipment with the same care you'd give your own electronics, and keeping it secured when not in use.
If equipment is damaged, malfunctions, or is lost or stolen during your rental period, please contact us as soon as possible at starboundrentalsadmin@gmail.com or (801) 654-0309 (text messages welcome). Prompt reporting helps us resolve issues quickly and fairly.
Equipment returned reasonably clean requires no additional charge. If equipment is returned excessively dirty (for example, requiring more than routine cleaning) a reasonable cleaning fee may be deducted from the deposit.
If you disagree with a damage assessment, reach out to us directly — we're a small local business and want every rental to end fairly for both sides.
